Alan Bennett's - People

Last night we spent a fabulous evening at the Norwich Theatre Royal watching the charming new play by Alan Bennett - People.

It was, at it's heart, a wonderful exploration into the relationship between people and objects. Why [in the case of this play] should a necklace, in one person's hand be so precious that it should be on show in a museum ... in another's hand it is just a gift from a friend.

In this play the necklace is actually a treasured rosary with a royal history. At the end of the play it has a different history altogether.

What makes us hang on to the past with objects ?

Why are we so obsessed with the past ?

Why are the belongings of one person treasured and given extreme value ?

Objects tie us together because they last longer than we do.

This is a lovely play. I could watch it 100 times and still learn from it.
