Search for Jazz - The Best Sounds from Jazz Vinyl - Collect and Play Jazz Playlists

Jazz music is always developing. Jazz musicians are developing also, some as a result of changing fads and others by osmosis from the other musicians around them. It was this osmosis. This website is designed to be searched. You can search for all Jazz Musicians by name and see which albums they have performed on and the other jazz musicians that they have worked with.

Introduction

So, what is this site about ?

My interest in jazz lies far deeper than just putting a record on, kicking back and listening (although this is a big part of it). The thing that drew me deeply into jazz was the basic construction of the typical jazz album.

A Jazz album is different to a pop album because it will (where possible) list the musicians that have been recorded, it will list the dates when the recordings were made and it will inform you of the venue also.

With this information and a couple of thousand records, spanning 5 decades of jazz, you can chart the progress, relationships and influences of the musicians that perform on the recordings ... and the thought of doing this has driven me for many years.

In the early days I tried to follow jazz musicians careers using spreadsheets, flow diagrams and info cards ... all too slow and very time consuming. With the advent of Blogger and Google Search it makes it much easier to catalogue my collection and draw relationships between them through the artists that perform on them. It's amazing to stumble upon unlikely jazz partnerships and then listen to the music that was the result.

Yes, this site is mainly for me to research my own collection. But I also hope to inspire others to join in the practice and hopefully keep the memories of these great performers alive and kicking.

I would love to hear your thoughts ... colin@search4jazz.com

I am an avid collector of early jazz classics, ranging from 1920's to 1960's. On this blog I will attempt to gradually list my whole collection and keep my fingers crossed that people will be interested enough in collecting jazz on vinyl to leave their memories and comments ... Colin Hall (2010)
