Jazz music is always developing. Jazz musicians are developing also, some as a result of changing fads and others by osmosis from the other musicians around them. It was this osmosis. This website is designed to be searched. You can search for all Jazz Musicians by name and see which albums they have performed on and the other jazz musicians that they have worked with.

Pete Allen's All Star Jazz Band at Gorleston Pavilion Theatre
Pete Allen's All Star Jazz Band at Gorleston Pavilion Theatre
Wonderful entertainment, great stagecraft and good old jazz classics that get you singing and tapping your feet. Pete Allen's All Star Jazz Band is certainly a band that I would go and watch again ... and again. Playing their way through classic traditional tunes, this band are special in their accuracy to the stars that made the songs famous. Pete Allen has a great voice that can pick out those little mannerisms that we all recognise from Thomas 'Fats' Waller and Louis Armstrong.
This band show all of the signals that we appreciated while watching Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen a few months ago. They seem to like one another and this comes over in the fun that oozes from their performance.
The band very kindly granted me permission to take a few pics and I've added some at the bottom of this post for you to take a look. But don't take my word for it ... get along and see for yourselves ... they're great !
You can find a list of upcoming events on Pete Allen's Website.
Pete Allen - Clarinet, Sax & Vocals
Dave Moorwood - Banjo, Guitar & Vocals
Gary Wood - Trumpet
Micky Cooke - Trombone
Dave Hanratty - Bass
John Petters - Drums

Camden Jazz Cafe - African Jazz Allstars
At the weekend Bev & I popped down to London to see the African Jazz Allstars. Their music is both relaxing and exhilarating in equal measures, with top notch horn playing and wicked drums slowly mesmerising the audience into a group swaying. I've posted a video of them below and would definitely advise anyone who hasn't heard them live to get along to the London African Music Festival in September - http://www.joyfulnoise.co.uk/

Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen at the Cromer Pier 2011
Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen at the Cromer Pier 2011
The Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen Golden Collection CD - Worth Buying, even if you haven't seen them live ! |
Oh man, this is a band that I've always said that I should go and see. So why had I put it off for so long ? I guess I just had an obsession with the 30's through to 60's and thought that Kenny Ball was a name from the 70's and therefore wouldn't tick my boxes. I really couldn't have been more wrong !
The Kenny Ball Band is probably the most fun, dynamic and entertaining jazz band that I've ever seen. The many years that the band have been playing together is fully reflected in their incredible team stage craft. It seemed to me, sat in the audience, that this band truly love playing together. They bounce off of each other, both musically and humourously ... providing an intimate encounter for all of their listeners ( Old fans and new ones ).
Unlike some modern jazz bands, this band love an encore call from their audience and because of their many years together they perform exactly the right piece to satisfy the audience. We were treated to many Louis Armstrong numbers, played with accuracy and style.
Digby Fairweather Signed my Ticket ! |
We were gifted Digby Fairweather as a second trumpet player as well ! What amazing value and entertainment.
To anyone who is too snobbish to go and see Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen ... You are missing a trick. Get yourself over to their website, find the next venue and buy those tickets. You will not be disappointed ;-)

Also a quick note for anyone looking for a bite to eat before going to the Cromer Pier on a Saturday night, we can heartily recommend the Old Rock Shop Bistro. Very friendly, lovely food and good chat.
