This is the second release in a series presenting previously-unissued studio recordings by Benny Goodman his small groups and his orchestra. It follows immediately upon the last selection on the initial release (PHONTASTIC MOST 7606 - Volume I).

The time is 13 September 1939. Then artists recorded their works in their entireties as many times as needed to get one rendition of each that was wholly satisfactory to them. These were the versions that were released; those that were not are termed "alternate takes." The unchosen may be flawed mechanically they may contain a musical or vocal error or they may simply reflect a personal preference of the moment. They are not necessarily inferior; they are different.

In main the recordings here are alternate takes (a few are wholly new). That aspect will appeal to the collector. But in toto this LP will have a wider appeal and not only for nostalgic reasons. Some of Benny's best work some of his most enduring arrangements some of his most talented sidemen and some of his most notable vocalists are heard -- and heard with a slight difference.

Finally one facet should appeal to collector and casual fan alike: These are studio recordings and their audio quality is excellent. Put aside those old 78s and enjoy these versions.
